Michelle (Mickie) Nyamai Muchilwa is a Kenyan born Designer, worldmaker and artist. Their commitment is to creating inclusive, kind, regenerative and life-affirming futures. At 15 Nyamai founded the Osiepe Sango Rescue Team, an NGO working towards restoring the lake that raised them, Nam Lolwe (Lake Victoria) to its pristine condition through the Bring Back Lake Victoria campaign (awareness), Ziwa Safi App (citizen science) and the Nam Lolwe Youth Summit (youth empowerment and decolonial worldmaking). Nyamai aims to create modes of being, development and growth that center relationality, indigenous knowledge and the wellbeing of humans, ecosystems and the more than human world. At Tufts University, they are pursuing a BS in Engineering Psychology and a BFA in Interdisciplinary Studio Art. Their work is transdisciplinary, moving across worldmaking mediums to understand how the world came to work this way and how we can design it differently, better. Nyamai believes in changing things by being with the world differently. To that end, their artistic practice (spanning Photography, Papermaking, Video and more) focuses on challenging the way things are, and opening the curtain to kinder worlds and gentler futures. They take their art seriously as an epistemology, allowing it to answer the questions that must be asked to create a better world.
